The Terrace of the Dolomites, where even a meal becomes an experience to remember

The Terrace of the Dolomites, where even a meal becomes an experience to remember.

At 2,950 metres above sea level, on Sass Pordoi, there is a place where the mountains reveal themselves in all their grandeur. This is Rifugio Maria, overlooking the famous Terrace of the Dolomites, a natural balcony offering a spectacular 360° panorama: from Marmolada to Sassolungo, from Catinaccio to the Sella Group, with Piz Boè rising close by, and views extending towards the Tofane, Pelmo and, on clear days, the Austrian and Swiss Alps.

Getting here is part of the experience. The Sass Pordoi cable car takes you straight up into the high mountains, where pale Dolomite rock meets the sky and every direction reveals a different view. It is a place to slow down, take it all in and enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by the very heart of the Dolomites.

The cuisine follows the same philosophy: telling the story of the mountains through food. At Rifugio Maria, the culinary traditions of Val di Fassa and the Dolomites meet local ingredients and a creative touch, creating dishes that remain rooted in mountain cooking while allowing room for contemporary interpretations.

At the table, you will find some of the flavours that have always belonged to mountain cuisine: canederli, polenta, speck, local cheeses, mushrooms and meat, alongside more contemporary dishes inspired by the landscape and its ingredients. The menu includes a trio of canederli, homemade schlutzkrapfen, goulash served with polenta and a dumpling, as well as dishes featuring local specialities such as Puzzone cheese and wild berries.

And then there are the desserts, perfect for ending a high-altitude break: from apple strudel to Kaiserschmarrn, with plenty of desserts featuring berries and other mountain flavours. Because even a simple afternoon treat becomes something special when there are almost three thousand metres of Dolomite scenery outside the window.

Rifugio Maria is, above all, a place to stop and look around. A privileged viewpoint from which to experience Sass Pordoi and Val di Fassa, whether after a hike, during a day in the mountains or simply because you want to reach one of the most spectacular panoramic terraces in the Dolomites.

Here, the view is not simply the backdrop to a meal: it is part of the table, the atmosphere and the memory you take home with you.
