Just a few kilometres from the centre of Moena, surrounded by woodland and mountain scenery, Malga Peniola is one of those places worth seeking out simply for the pleasure of stopping and enjoying the moment. A simple, authentic mountain retreat where the character of the surroundings can be felt as soon as you walk through the door, and where the Dantone family continues to share its traditions through warm hospitality and local cuisine.

The story of the malga dates back to 1960, and since then Peniola has remained a special place for discovering the genuine flavours of Ladin and mountain cuisine. The dining rooms, with their traditional wooden Ladin stube, create a warm and intimate atmosphere – the perfect setting for sitting down after a walk and letting the aromas of the kitchen take over.

The cuisine follows the flavours of the mountains. On the table you will find canederli, barley soup, spätzle, grilled cheeses and Tosèla, alongside heartier dishes such as polenta with venison, sausages or goulash, roast pork shank and game specialities. Traditional desserts, from strudel to panna cotta, often come with the fresh taste of mountain berries.

Among the specialities is the Peniola platter, bringing together some of the most characteristic flavours of mountain cooking: polenta, venison, melted cheese, sausage, mushrooms and goulash. It is generous, comforting food made for sharing – a way of telling the story of the valley through simple ingredients and recipes rooted in local tradition.

Guests can also take a little piece of Peniola home with them. The malga sells a selection of local specialities, including cheeses, Puzzone di Moena, speck, venison salami, mustards, honey and grappa.

Getting to Malga Peniola is part of the experience. From Moena, it takes about an hour on foot, following a route through the woods, while the journey by car takes around ten minutes. In winter, when snow makes access more difficult, the family also provides a transport service for guests.

Malga Peniola is a place to enjoy at a slower pace, letting the warmth of the wooden stube, the aromas from the kitchen and the quiet of the mountains create the atmosphere. A little corner of Val di Fassa where tradition is not simply something to be told, but something that continues to be lived every day.
