BAITA CHECCO
Not just a simple mountain hut, but a high-altitude restaurant at 2,000m in a unique setting in the Dolomites of the Fassa Valley
Three generations, a family story and Matthias’ cuisine in the heart of the Dolomites.
The story of Baita Checco began long before the mountain hut took its present name. In 1945, grandfather Checco and his family took over the management of Rifugio Fronza alle Coronelle. From one generation to the next, their passion for the mountains, hospitality and cooking was passed down until it reached Ciampedie, where, in 1999, brothers Vittorio and Pierpaolo transformed an old hay barn into a characteristic mountain hut, proudly naming it after their grandfather.
Today, at 2,000 metres above sea level, Baita Checco continues that story with a new generation. Antonella, Matthias’ mother, welcomes guests and looks after the dining room, while her son Matthias carries the family tradition into the kitchen. It is a natural passing of the torch, shaped by memories, recipes and a knowledge of food that first grew within the family home.
Matthias’ cuisine begins precisely there. His grandmother’s recipes, from whom he first learned to cook, are the starting point for a cuisine rooted in Trentino and Ladin traditions, while still leaving room for creativity and new combinations. The ingredients, often sourced locally and mostly from Trentino, are carefully selected and treated with respect, allowing their natural qualities to shine through.
Alongside more refined creations, the menu celebrates the great flavours of mountain cooking: canederli, polenta, mushrooms and mountain meats, dishes deeply rooted in the culinary memory of the valley and given a contemporary touch at Baita Checco. Gluten-free options and a dedicated children’s menu are also available, reflecting the family’s welcoming approach to every guest.
The experience is about more than what arrives on the plate. Baita Checco sits in the spectacular natural amphitheatre of Ciampedie, surrounded by the peaks of the Dolomites, with a heated panoramic veranda offering an unforgettable setting. It is the kind of place where you naturally slow down, look around and let the mountains become part of the meal.
In summer, the experience can continue after sunset with a mountain dinner at 2,000 metres. The dinners are available by reservation, with a shuttle service provided by the hut – a special way to reach Ciampedie, dine among the mountains and experience the atmosphere of high altitude as the sun disappears behind the Dolomites.
Baita Checco is, ultimately, a story that continues. It is the story of a family that has nurtured its bond with the mountains for more than seventy years and now shares it through Antonella and Matthias: the warmth of someone welcoming you into their home, and the cooking of someone who has turned a passion inherited from his grandmother into his profession.
