L MALGHER

A family story that began with a small dairy and grew, generation after generation, into a food shop where treasured family recipes meet the flavours of Val di Fassa

A family story that began with a small dairy and grew, generation after generation, into a food shop where treasured family recipes meet the flavours of Val di Fassa.

Some food shops tell the story of a place through the products they sell. Others go further, because the place itself is part of the family story behind the shop. L Malghèr, in the heart of Pozza di Fassa, belongs to the latter: a story that began more than a century ago, when milk was turned into cheese and butter, and that continues today through homemade specialities, traditional gastronomy and artisan baking.

The story began in 1921, when Giuseppe Dellagiacoma moved from Predazzo to Pozza di Fassa and opened a small private dairy. He bought milk from local farmers and transformed it into cheese and butter. It was a traditional craft, built around everyday work and a close relationship with local farmers and their milk. In 1961, his son Luigi took over the business and continued working with the family until the late 1980s.

In 1987, the story changed direction, but never came to an end. Luigi's daughter Linda and her husband Josef took over the shop and decided to turn it into an authentic food and delicatessen shop, moving away from milk processing. In the early years, Luigi still supplied the shop with the cheese he made during the summer at Malga Monzoni. Gradually, the range grew, shaped by a new idea of gastronomy centred on local specialities, artisan preparation and, above all, family recipes.

Josef, who has always had a passion for cooking, began bringing the flavours of his own family kitchen into the shop. It started with canederli and strudel, followed by his great-grandmother's apple cake from Munich, the Christmas biscuits his mother used to make and the potato gnocchi prepared by his mother-in-law. Recipes passed down through the family became part of the identity of L Malghèr, turning the shop into a place where you can taste, rather than simply buy, a piece of its story.

Today, L Malghèr is a lively food shop where a wide selection of cheeses and traditional Trentino specialities sits alongside many homemade products: canederli, spätzle, ravioli, ciajoncie, potato gnocchi and fresh pasta, as well as bread, focaccia, pizza, strudel, homemade cakes, tarts, brioches, krapfen, biscuits and other fresh pastries. It is a generous offering built around the same attention to ingredients, traditional techniques and authentic flavours that has always guided the family.

And the story continues with Vittoria and Sebastian, Linda and Josef's children, who are now carrying the family philosophy forward with the same passion and dedication. That is perhaps the ingredient shared by everything at L Malghèr: the ability to look to the future while remaining firmly connected to what came before.

The shop also prepares buffets, small receptions and cakes for special occasions. And in summer, there is an even more original way to enjoy its flavours outdoors: a picnic basket, available to order for a delicious break surrounded by the mountains.

From a small dairy founded in 1921 to a shop filled with cheese, traditional foods, bread and sweets, L Malghèr is a story that has never stopped being about family, food and place.

And perhaps that is its greatest charm: you walk in looking for something delicious and leave with the flavours of Val di Fassa — and a little piece of a family's story to take home with you.
